As a student working at the intersection of creative direction and data analytics, how do you balance intuition with insights?

I treat intuition as the starting point and data as the refinement tool. My creative instincts are heavily influenced by hobbies like cartoons, comic books, manga, and anime. Those mediums are intentional with storytelling, color, emotion, and audience engagement, and they constantly inspire how I think about visual direction and narrative. Once an idea forms, I rely on analytics and data helps me understand what resonates and why it works.

What’s your favorite way to reset creatively when school feels overwhelming?

When school becomes overwhelming, I reset by immersing myself in the kinds of storytelling that first inspired me. Watching anime, revisiting comics, or even breaking down how certain scenes are structured helps me reconnect with creativity without pressure. Sometimes stepping away from structured assignments and simply observing art allows me to return with a clearer head.

What’s something you’ve learned about yourself since starting college that surprised you?

Since starting college, I’ve learned that I thrive when I combine both analytical thinking with creative expression. I used to view those strengths separately, but I now see how naturally they complement each other. I’ve also realized how adaptable and disciplined I can be when balancing academics, work, and long term goals. That growth surprised me and built a stronger sense of confidence.

How do you protect your creativity while juggling school, work, and expectations?

I protect my creativity by creating space for ideas that are not tied to only grades or outcomes. Not everything needs to be optimized or evaluated. Allowing myself to experiment freely keeps creativity authentic and prevents burnout. I also prioritize rest and boundaries because protecting my energy is essential to sustaining creative clarity.

What kind of impact do you hope to make through your work, especially as a student still exploring?

I hope to create work that merges strategy with storytelling in a way that feels intentional and culturally aware. As a student still exploring, my goal is to contribute ideas that are both imaginative and grounded in insight. Long term, I want to demonstrate that strong creative direction and data driven thinking can work together to create meaningful and measurable impact.

Have there been any classes, projects, or campus experiences at Illinois State that helped you feel confident in the direction you want to go?

Participating in the PSP competition where I collaborated with real local businesses and won third place, showed me how valuable teamwork and connection are. Since then, I’ve taken part in other projects like the Apple Swift Challenge and the WindowsWear x Coach competition, and this has strengthened my skills and confidence. These experiences teach me that creativity grows when paired with collaboration, exploration, and real-world application.
