What makes her awesome

Hello! I’m Esther, and I am a Computer Science student who is passionate about learning new things and pursuing a career in software engineering. Besides my love for technology, I am also interested in fashion and clothing. I grew up in a small town in Tanzania, East Africa, and I am fluent in Swahili. Swahili is a language that is close to my heart because it connects me to my cultural heritage. When I am not working on my coursework, I enjoy hanging out with friends and partying, especially after a long week of studying. I also like to stay active by going for walks, and doing cardio.

During my free time, I like to unwind by watching TV shows and movies as it helps me recharge. And of course, I always make sure to dress up for any occasion – I believe that fashion is a great way to express yourself and feel confident. Lastly, generosity is a core value that I uphold, and I always try to be kind and giving to those around me. I am thrilled to be part of this community of women in tech and excited to connect more with like-minded individuals!

  • The moment she knew a career in tech was for her

Deciding what I wanted to pursue after high school was not an easy decision for me. I knew I was interested in technology and math, but I wasn’t sure how to turn those interests into a career. After ruling out many majors, including economics and arts, I decided to give computer science a shot. While the coursework was initially challenging, I discovered that I had a strong interest in the fundamental principles of computer systems, as well as in the intricacies of programming languages and algorithms, which drove my enthusiasm for studying computer science. I was curious about all the possibilities and it made me want to learn more. As I continued to study computer science, I found that it was becoming more manageable, and I realized that this was the career path for me. I hope to become a software engineer someday and I am excited to see where this journey takes me.
  • What the RTC community means to her

I joined Rewriting the Code because I was seeking a supportive community that shared my passion for empowering women of color in STEM fields. As a woman of color in computer science, I have faced firsthand the challenges of navigating a field that is not always welcoming or inclusive. Rewriting the Code’s mission to empower and support women of color in STEM resonates deeply with me, and I was drawn to the organization’s focus on building a supportive community for women in these fields. I believe that by working together, we can break down barriers and create a more equitable future for everyone in STEM.

I’m interested in using technology to solve problems related to gender inequality in STEM fields. Specifically, I want to help increase the representation of women in technology and address the gender gap in STEM careers. I believe that technology can be a powerful tool for promoting equality and empowering women to pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.
