by Liyans Mathews, RTC Ireland Ambassador 2025

When I moved to Ireland to pursue my Master’s in Data and Computational Science at University College Dublin, I never imagined how quickly this new chapter of my life would shape me. I had only been in the country for a few months when I was elected as the Rewriting the Code (RTC) Ireland Ambassador, and what began as an opportunity soon evolved into one of the most exceptional experiences of my time here.

Being part of RTC has introduced me to an extraordinary network of women, ambitious, inspiring, and incredibly supportive. A huge shoutout goes to Blessing, who guided us gracefully throughout the ambassador program and ensured we always felt confident and prepared. I am also deeply grateful to Emma, who interviewed me and encouraged me from day one, my fellow ambassador Faith, who was an incredible partner in leading the charge in Ireland and all the other UK ambassadors whose passion and dedication continually motivated me. I am truly indebted to each one of them, this experience has not just expanded my network; it has genuinely shaped my personality for the better.

As an ambassador, we had the incredible opportunity to host a variety of social and knowledge-imparting events across Ireland throughout the year. These events brought me closer to countless inspiring women who were just beginning their journeys with RTC or who were curious about joining. Each conversation reminded me why communities like RTC matter. They empower, uplift, and remind us that we belong. One of my favourite parts of being an ambassador was seeing women discover that sense of belonging in real time.

The year was full of unforgettable moments. One highlight was attending the Dublin Tech Summit, where we had a fantastic time meeting people, discussing the impactful work of RTC, and sharing our mission to empower women.

Another memorable event was the Diversity in Tech Awards, where RTC was nominated under the Cultural Inclusion category. It felt like a proud moment for our entire community. And the night became even more special when my fellow ambassador Faith won the Rising Star Award. Watching her walk onto the stage felt like seeing the values of RTC being celebrated in the spotlight. It reminded me of a quote I deeply resonate with: “When one woman rises, we all rise with her.” That night reflected exactly that.

The greatest “full circle” moment came after my final semester concluded. Alongside the brilliant Jess Rush, I had the privilege of representing RTC at the UCD Career Fair and, later, at the Women in STEM Society Career Fair. I remember the eager, inquisitive eyes of the students and early career individuals, just like my own had been not so long ago, keen to learn about RTC and join our community.
It was this very same Women in STEM Society career fair that had introduced me to RTC a year ago, leading me to apply, join the community, and ultimately become an ambassador. To now be on the other side, sharing my story and welcoming the next generation of women, felt like a powerful closing of one chapter and the exciting opening of another.

Looking back, I can confidently say that being an RTC Ambassador has shaped me in ways I didn’t expect. It strengthened my confidence, expanded my network, and helped me embrace leadership roles with authenticity and empathy. More importantly, it taught me the value of uplifting others, especially women navigating spaces where they deserve to be seen and heard. I have learned so much, and while my ambassadorship may be concluding, my commitment to this wonderful community is not. I look forward to continuing to contribute to RTC in many ways in the future.
