Rewriting the Code has been a huge support for me. When I moved to the UK in January 2024 for my master’s, I felt lost and unsure of how to build my tech career as a woman in a new country. FAQ

Will I have time for this alongside my course load?

You control your level of engagement. Some members check in daily, whilst others connect mainly during challenging coursework periods or when seeking placements. Our Slack community is available round-the-clock, but you participate when it suits your schedule, whether that’s between lectures or during late-night revision sessions.

Is this relevant to my specific technical interests?

Absolutely. We have dedicated channels for both technical topics (AI, data, cybersecurity) and personal interests (books, pets, self-care). Our community connects you with women who share your passions—whether you’re discussing the latest machine learning developments or taking a break to chat about your favourite novels.

What if I’m not at a Russell Group university?

Our community includes women from all types of institutions across the UK and Ireland: red brick universities, newer universities, and technical colleges. We believe talent exists everywhere, not just at traditional top-tier institutions. Many of our most active members come from diverse academic backgrounds.

How does this compare to my university’s women in tech society?

We complement university societies rather than replace them. Your local society provides valuable on-campus connections, whilst RTC gives you access to a nationwide network, industry mentors, and companies actively hiring women in tech. Many of our members are leaders in their university societies and use RTC to expand their opportunities.

How selective is the application process?

Not selective at all! We review applications simply to verify you’re a current student and identify as a woman in tech. If that’s you, you belong here, no need to worry about being “good enough” or having the “right” qualifications.

Can I join if I’m not a Computing student?

Absolutely! We welcome women studying data science, information systems, engineering, design, and other tech-related subjects. If you’re building technology or aiming for a tech career, this community is for you.

How much does membership cost?

Membership is completely free. We believe financial circumstances shouldn’t prevent any woman from accessing the support she needs to succeed in tech. Our Future of Tech Fund is also available for members facing financial challenges that impact their studies or career development.

I’m just starting my first computing module. Is it too early to join?

Not at all! Many members join during their first programming module. Getting support early in your journey can make a huge difference in your confidence and persistence in tech. You’ll connect with women who remember what it’s like to be new to coding and can help you build a strong foundation.
